Roma and I have been storing an archive of 35mm slides and negative for more than 60 years. In the last three years, we’ve scanned a lot of those images into digital format so that we can show them to the public.
For her book, Tracks of Passion, Robin Morning also tracked down and scanned thousands of images from the development of Mammoth Mountain starting in the early 1950s. Here is a selection of images from both collections. We have used these in several exhibitions, but many people who are fascinated by the history of skiing in the Eastern Sierra haven’t seen many of these images. Here is a small collection of some of our favorites.

I feel the same way as kwame. I’ve always been in love with the Eastern Sierras and would have loved to been there in the early days. I understand it was very hard work but I love that and it sure looks like fun as well!!
I’m only 27 but Ive always dreamed about what is was like skiing at mammoth during the early 1950′s with you and people like Jill Kinmont, you all were true pioneers.
Dave thank you for all you have done!
