This is a dead tree from the shore of Mono Lake. It’s been well-preserved through cycles for maybe thousands of years. But what is really going on?
It must have grown there before Mono Lake existed and was covered by fresh water at one point. Then, sometime after the 1940s’, when they started taking water out of the lake, it reappeared.
The tufas have a similar look and are a similar height. Does anybody have an idea of this tree’s history?
It’s something I’ve been very curious about since I found this.

I’d say it was about ten feet tall. It sure does look interesting.
