#55: 4th of July Parade Scans from Bishop and Mammoth

Happy 4th of July.

Last week, a man named Mark Fischer asked us to post some pictures of Bishop from the 1950s’. He moved to Bishop with his family in 1954 and they had their own pictures of the area, but they were lost in a house fire.

We dug through the archives of scanned slides and we were able to come up with the perfect selection. These are from the 4th of July Parades in Mammoth and Bishop, and range from about 30-to-60 years-old.

Look through the pictures, read through the captions and have a happy and safe 4th of July.

Below is the Mammoth Mountain float for the parade.

Mammoth was usually still open for the 4th, but Warming Hut II always closed much earlier so the year-round crew from The Hut would work on the parade float for us. Here is a shot of one of those floats. Roma is in front with some of the grandkids and some friends and employees.

Here is a boyscout troop at the corner of Meridian and Old Mammoth.  This is Gus Weber at the Bishop parade. Gus was the head of ski school at the mountain and built many of the backcountry trails near Red’s Meadow. Here is Jack’s Waffle Shop. It’s still in the same place it was back then. BBQ Bill’s is also still there. Safeway used to be right there too, and now Golden State Cycle is right behind this spot.
This is the float for the Shriner’s Club.
