#290: Mono Lake and Wild Horses in Adobe Meadows

Last week, when our son Poncho was here, he and I went for an afternoon trip to Mono Lake to shoot some photos. We went up Highway 395 by Mammoth and got some shots of The Mountain on the way.

It was a beautiful day so we ended up driving around the back of Mono Lake to Adobe Meadows. We’ve been there a few times to shoot photos of the wild horses and on this day, we were in luck.

We came across a huge herd of them right when we got out there. I have no way of knowing exactly how many we saw, but I’d guess about 200.

When we pulled up, they started running across the horizon directly in front of us. We didn’t trigger the stampede. Maybe they were spooked by something, just wanted to show off, or were looking for some exercise, but they surprised us.

We followed them across the valley for a bit before heading back to Bishop on Highway 6.

It was a great day in the middle of an awesome week.

There’s more on the way so stop back by soon.

-Dave

A small Hello from France,
You live in a magnificent area. The nature and the wild life occupy an important place in these wide-open spaces.
I always enjoyed the elegance of horses. These are magnificent animals, with much grace. It is sure that this stampede of about 200 specimens is surprising.
The Mono Lake photos are really very beautiful. The low clouds “Cumulus” give depth to your shots. The Tufa columns which emerge from the water resemble creatures with their outstretched arms. Maybe they want to reach the clouds. The Tufa towers are laid directly on the ground, without inking. Bizarre phenomenon !
A I forgot, I would like to join the Clampers, congratulations for all the work that you have already provided during all his years, but also for everything you do today.
Bye

Absolutely beautiful pictures! I’ve always wanted to see the wild horses out by Mono Lake but never had the opportunity or luck. Your site is really wonderful and it really highlights the Eastern Sierras. I’ll be waiting for more so you know I’ll be stopping back soon! Thank you so very much.

Thank you, Mr. McCoy for posting these pictures and all the pictures you post. I grew up in Bishop, but haven’t lived there in a long and the photos bring back great memories.
